¡bienvenido!

¡Hola, amigos! IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!!
The time has come for Brian and Sarah to seal the deal, marriage style. They know their friends and family have been patiently waiting for the big day! And what a day it will be! What better way to celebrate than with a warm, dreamy, coastal vacation during the cold of month February. Can you think of a better place to celebrate tying the knot than in their favorite tropical getaway? Cozumel is nestled right in the heart of the crystal blue Caribbean Sea and truly has something for everyone. There will be plenty of beach chairs for lounging and bottles of champagne for popping!
All that is missing are your lovely faces.

There is a full weekend fiesta planned for anyone that would like to partake in an extended beach vacation, but please don’t feel pressured to attend every event.

Make sure to RSVP to any parties you’re bringing your party pants for by 11/11/24.
See you at the beach!

How I met your fiancé

The Bride

It was the Friday after Thanksgiving break before 2019, when mutual friends encouraged us to attend a party to met as a sort of blind date. Brian arrived late, after another date and wasted no time asking every girl at the party, “who was running the Dallas marathon?”. It was clichè and romantic, but I still didn’t know who he was. So, similar to a sales call, I hesitated and slowly raised my hand. He cornered me! We chatted outside for what seemed like 5 minutes, but quickly turned into a half an hour. And to my surprise, he was as charming as he was handsome(even a few drinks deep, haha). A friend at the party was fostering a 6 week old puppy that ended up in being babysat in Brian’s arms all night. Major bonus point for him. He asked me to play beer pong, with the puppy in his arms, and we absolutely crushed the next few games. Bonus points again! In that moment, a text was sent, “guys… I think I met the one”, and the rest was history.

The Groom

Two months later, I was faced with an impossible decision. I had just won an all-expenses-paid work trip to Breckenridge. I REALLY wanted to invite Sarah, but was paralyzed with the fear of whether or not it was too soon. I didn’t want to come on too strong and scare her off, but I couldn’t imagine going without her.

As if the universe knew exactly what I needed in that moment, I received a text. It was a meme from Sarah with an older couple in matching Hawaiian shirts at the airport with the words “couple goals”. That video gave me an idea… One week later, the package arrived. I had our matching Hawaiian outfits ready for the road. Sarah was shocked and impressed. The group chats went crazy. I could tell this was a good move.

Colorado was a blast and we survived our first trip together. It was also both our first times seeing real, rocky mountain snow. We were hooked after experiencing the high-altitude vibes.

It was a few years before I realized the magnitude of this trip and how it would soon bring us to back to Colorado together, but this time as residents. I’ll always remember Breck being the place I won Sarah over. In my mind, that trip sealed the deal.

Cozumel, Mexico

Get Busy
These are just a few of the Hopson’s fav stop’s from more than 30 years of visiting the island!!

Aqui + Ahora Coffee

directionsWhether you’re working or relaxing, AQUÍ + AHORA is the perfect place to be in the present moment with good coffee, get some work done with their great wifi connection, orrrrrr dance with the live DJ at night. This is also home to our favorite Espresso Martini’s and some pretty amazing hand cut fries. Be sure to check out the rooftop, the ocean breeze is unbeatable.

Maple Bakehouse

DirectionsWe understand that your pilates and juice routine might not jive with a full weekend of tacos & tequila binging, so swing by Maple Bakehouse for your coffee or fresh smoothie fix. Open from early morning until mid-afternoon, this cute place serves up the best baked goods in all the land making the yummiest breakfast sandwiches to pair. The Croque Madame is what we come for, but it’s hard to go wrong.

Pro Tip : try the famous Mayan Hot Chocolate instead of coffee like the locals. You won’t regret it!

The Thirsty Cougar

directionsAn Island institution! Better yet, a seaside boozery.

Stroll along the Cozumel Malecón and visit The Cougar, one of the perfect spots to enjoy a mix of fresh seafood, giant Cougaritas, and live music!

Bonus : The fresh frozen drinks are served up on the fanciest plastic Disney plates money can buy.

Beware!! An alcoholic expat may attempt to pick you up from here ;)

Pancho's Backyard

directionsSearching for good ol’ traditional Mexican food? Pancho’s backyard has extraordinary good food and delicious Piña Coladas that are served on the lush patio in one of Cozumel’s most beautiful colonial buildings, amidst splashing fountains and tasteful decor. Live Marimba music during lunch!

El Palomar

directionsIconic house built in 1903, today considered Cultural Heritage of the Island of Cozumel. Art exhibitions meets Mixology and Island Cuisine. This is truly a one stop shop with amazing views, gorgeous photo ops, and fantastic craft cocktails. Calling all spritz lovers!!! This is home to one of the best Aperol Spritz on island, light and refreshing. Or just have the bartender whip up something unique to your tastebuds, just share your favorite drink or flavor profiles and let them do their thing!

Guido's Restaurant

directions
So much history at Guido’s, it’s no wonder it’s an island classic. Guido was a classically trained chef with amazing French culinary skills who brought his talents back home and opened the current restaurant still open today. The two current head chefs learned much of their French culinary skills from Guido over 40 years ago and continue crafting elegant dishes “at home” as homage to their former boss and the legacy they’ve built. Enter Yvonne, Guido’s daughter. She studied abroad at Luzern Hotel and Restaurant Management school in Switzerland and manages the current staff. Some people have said that Guido’s is Cozumel’s version of the TV show Cheers. “A place where everybody knows your name”. They know their job is not only to serve food and drinks properly. You won’t regret this dinner spot.

Travel

Wish you could teleport to the beach? Us, too. Here are the next best options.

Fly Direct

Start by Googling Flights, but here’s the deal, American is generally your girl. If you find another option that is your favorite, that’s GREAT! In our experience AA has always been the least expensive when flying direct from DFW (OTHER THAN SOUTHWEST which is stopping in 8/2024 sadly. RIP 2 bags free)Find Flights

Fly-Bus-Ferry

To save a pretty penny, and I do mean almost 50% sometimes, you can easily fly direct to Cancun. From there you have options to get to the ferry in Playa del Carmen!

$60 US for a private taxi or
$18 for an ADO bus ticket (very nice air conditioned bus takes about an hour, no chickens or goats!)
Then you would walk with your luggage a few blocks to the ferry pier. $8-$12 for one of the three ferries (we prefer Ultramar) and it will take another 40 minutes to get to the COZ ferry pier, but there is usually live music!
From there you can catch a taxi to wherever you need to go. In total you will add almost two hours and $20 – $75 to your journey.
It’s a little longer travel day, but you can’t put a price on the scenic experience!!
Budget Friendly Flight+ADO Bus+Ferry

Local Transportation Options

Cozumel is pretty small town and it is totally safe to rent a car, just make sure your stay has ample parking, overnight parking is at a premium. When renting a jeep/car, make sure to rent in the city not at the airport for better prices. Although, some in-town rental companies will now pick you up at the airport. We can help with questions about this! Keep in mind, driving in Mexico can be kind of funny if you aren’t used to the relaxed rules of the road there. Better to be safe if that worries you!

Rental Car/Moped Recommendations
(We personally vetted all of these companies, super reliable) Be sure to confirm if your vehicle is automatic or manual when booking. Most topless jeeps are stick shift.
1. HTL – This company can coordinate meeting your party with a car just outside the airport. They offer jeeps (manual/standard), cars and Mopeds.
2. Rentadora ISIS – Jeeps, Cars, Mopeds

Taxi’s
Taxi’s are the most reliable way to get around the island quickly. Totally safe, but not on a regulated meter. Always make sure to confirm your total with the driver before agreeing to the ride.

TukTuk
What is a TukTuk : a 3 wheel red little mototaxi that
generally is reserved for taxi’ing locals, but will take tourist when they are slow. Totally safe, same rules apply.

Ask for more info.

Q&A

Questions? We have answers!

Do I need a passport?
Yes! You will need a valid passport that does not expire within 6 months. Current processing times are taking longer than usual (6-10 weeks), so make sure you check on your whole parties passport early. We would hate to miss you!

First time to Mexico, anything to know upon arrival?
Avoid the time share salespeople in the airport at all cost. You will literally run the gauntlet of them as you exit the terminal after customs. They are only in the airport not outside, so once you exit you are home free. Just smile, say no and keep walking! Unless you want to buy a time share?

Do I need an international phone plan?
No! When traveling in Mexico, your phone will work same as it does within the United States. You will not need to pay any additional roaming charges or fees with most carriers. Keep in mind, roaming may be at 2G speeds.

What is the weather expected to be?
The island enjoys a mild climate with average high temperatures hovering around 83°F, and the nights are comfortably cool at about 68°F. This balance of warm days and cooler evenings makes it ideal for both beach activities and night time festivities. Humidity is low and legend has it you may even want a light sleeve on some evenings.

Do I need to rent a car/jeep?
No, but you certainly can! Car Rental suggestions are listed under the Travel tab. The main issue with renting is parking downtown is very hard to find. Be sure to explore your nightly parking options before booking.

Can I take Taxi’s everywhere during my stay?
Yes! And they are pretty affordable and reliable.

Are Taxi’s safe?
You betcha! Tourism is a main form of income for Coz, so you won’t find any funny business happening here. Just always confirm your ride total before agreeing to ride.

How much should a typical cab to or from downtown to the hotel cost?
$5-$15 USD is usually the going rate. Just move on to the next one if the price offered is outrageous. Trust me there will be more!

Forgot something at home?
No problem! The Mega is their version of Walmart and will most likely have any missing items you might need!

Need snacks and filtered water?
Find the nearest Oxxo (Cozumel’s 7-11) and enjoy!

Can I drink the water at my hotel?
NO. Most all hotels provide bottled water bottles at your bathroom sink, it is advisable to brush your teeth with the provided purified water. Everyone, including locals, drink purified. Restaurants serve purified water and ice.

Any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us! We love Cozumel so much and want to help make your trip go as smooth and unforgettable as possible.
